Do Social Distance, Don't Social Stop
The physical dangers of Covid-19 are present and apparent to everyone.
We are all taking precautions to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.
However, there are other more insidious problems that can occur as a result of our steps taken to stay healthy.
Social distancing may keep us physically safe, but it does take its toll on our mental health.
We are social beings and we need human interaction.
Thankfully, thanks to our high tech modern world, there are plenty of options available for us to stay connected with friends and family.
Here at Arrowhead Clinic Albany we want you to be aware of all potential tools for keeping your social circle together, every during a pandemic.
That is why we have compiled a list of seven activities one can partake in to stay in touch with those you care about.
Even before the virus, our society was filled with texting.
Everyone seemed to text like their lives depended on it.
Well now, in a manner of speaking, they do.
At least our social lives.
Texting and online chats are by far one of the quickest and easiest ways to maintain contact with people beyond your own home.
Some applications even allow you to send pictures back and forth as simply as texting them.
Messaging in all its forms was something we were all intimately familiar with before the pandemic, so it should be very easy to implement now.
2. Social Media
Social media options are not necessarily direct communication venues.
However, they can still be utilized to spread information about yourself to others, and to receive it.
You can help keep track of all your friends and family as simply as checking out their social media pages.
It isn’t as fun to simply read about what other people are doing. We would all much prefer to actual be with them, but for the time being it should suffice.
3. Video Calls
Video technology has improved astronomically over the past decade.
By and large, we have the capability to look at our loved ones face to face from nearly any smart device or computer without any additional equipment.
Some types of smart phones can even inherently communicate with other smart phones of the same brand.
However, if someone you want to video chat with does not share your brand, thats okay too!
There are plenty of applications you both can download that can connect you as easily as pressing a few buttons.
4. Phone Calls
The art of the traditional phone call seems to be going by the wayside.
Many people prefer to interact over messaging, texting, or video calls.
However, desperate times call for desperate measures.
Perhaps now is the time to dust off the old landline (or maybe just stick with your cell phone), place it against your ear and simply gab away.
It may not be modern or even fashionable, but it certainly does allow you to communicate with relative ease.
5. Online Gaming
Admittedly, this method appeals to more of a niche group.
However, for those who are so inclined to game, playing online with your friends is a great way to stay social.
This can be achieved through any number of platforms, from consoles, to computers, and even your smart phone.
Not only will it provide you with the ability to directly communicate over a headset, you’ll also get the sense of achievement as you compete or work together to achieve your virtual goals.
6. Letter Writing
With the exception of a birthday or holiday card, when was the last time you received a handwritten sentiment from someone through the mail?
It’s probably been awhile, if ever.
Why not take this time to engage in a traditional form of communication that reaches back hundreds of years?
Obviously, we do not rely on handwritten communication as much as we used to.
It may be necessary to freshen up your printing or cursive skills.
7. Get Creative!
They say necessity is the mother of all invention.
This latest crisis has certainly left a lot of necessity, and it is practically guaranteed that some sort innovation will come from it.
However, on a much smaller scale, creative measures can be taken to ensure ones ability to stay social.
As wonderful and helpful as the aforementioned measures are, they are not comparable to actual physical contact.
There are things one can do to physically see loved ones, while strictly adhering to the rules of social distancing.
It can be done with the proper precautions and a little creativity are implemented.
One method, is to drive to a mutual spot and visit with a loved one without leaving your car, while talking through a cell phone.
However, it only works if you each stay sealed in your own car.
If this proves to be too much of a temptation, consider the other 6 previously posted ideas.
Admittedly, this takes a lot of effort.
Despite this, it will provide a safe way to at least see a loved one in person.
This is a trying time for all of us.
There has not been a pandemic like this since the early 1900’s.
Thankfully, we have a lot more resources available to us now then we did then.
There is no excuse for foregoing social interaction.
We are constantly being advised to keep our distance from others, but at the same time we can not get through this time of crisis by ourselves.
Do not shut yourself off from the emotional, relational, and sometimes even physical help you require.
Even though Covid-19 is the current threat, that doesn’t mean all other threats have gone away.
